Four and a half miles and 200 metres of climbing in a little over two hours around one of the great lead-mining landscapes of the Pennines, past Perry’s Dam and over the edge of Flinty Fell. Start at the Nenthead Mines heritage site car park just below the village, which is free and rarely more than half full, at 440 metres one of the highest trailheads in England. Mine tracks give easy off-lead walking with burns and reservoirs to drink from, but this is a scheduled monument riddled with old shafts and open levels that a dog should not be allowed to explore, and the fell above is grazed with ground-nesting birds from March to July.

THE SMALL PRINTOld shafts, open levels and unstable spoil across the scheduled mine site: dogs need keeping to the tracks. Leads on the fell above from March to July for ground-nesting birds, and sheep graze it all year.
