Three and a half miles with 140 metres of climbing, an hour and a half up the Shildon Burn past the old lead-mine engine house, over the hill on a bridleway and back down the Derwent by Baybridge. Start from the free village car park just before the bridge at Blanchland, which holds about 30 cars and is the only sensible parking in this single-street estate village. Riverside and woodland where a dog can safely be loose with the Derwent to swim in, but the middle section crosses grazed pasture with gates, and the lane past Baybridge is narrow with fast cars in summer.

Five miles and 230 metres of climbing in about two and a half hours, up the old carriers’ road to Pennypie House, out along the heather of Blanchland Moor and back down to the Derwent. Start at the free car park at the entrance to Blanchland village, about 30 spaces and the only parking there is. Big open moorland running for a dog that will come back, with burns to drink from and no traffic, but this is a managed grouse moor grazed by sheep where ground-nesting birds mean leads from March to July, and the National Park’s Take the Lead signage applies on the open ground.

While the cottage is secluded it is not completely detached from civilisation and is situated close to the idyllic village of Blanchland which houses shops tearooms and a post office. From hiking to fishing and sailing there s plenty to do in the local area. The beautiful Derwent Reservoir is a particularly popular spot with keen fishers as it is brimming with rainbow trout as well as hikers who enjoy the breath-taking reservoir views. Only 11 miles from the property are the lovely market towns of Hexham and Corbridge as well as the world-famous Hadrian s Wall. The cottage is cosy and welcoming and is equipped with all the facilities needed for a family holiday. The ground floor hosts a spacious lounge with comfortable chairs and TV/DVD. The fully-equipped breakfasting kitchen has an electric oven and hob microwave dishwasher fridge and freezer. You ll also find a spacious dining room with a large table seating seven and a cloakroom with WC on the ground floor. Three and a half easy miles in an hour and three quarters on the flat river meadows, upstream to the Roman supply town at Corstopitum and back through the village. Park at the bridge-end car park south of the Tyne, free for two hours, or the longer-stay car park behind Hill Street; both are five minutes from the start. Wide open haughs give a good off-lead run with plenty of river access, but the grass is grazed at times, the Tyne is fast and cold after rain, and dogs on leads are allowed round the Roman site though not in its museum.

Six miles in three hours or so, north out of the village past the Roman town and up quiet lanes and field paths to the fortified manor house at Aydon, returning by Aydon Bank. Start from the car park on the south side of the Tyne bridge at Corbridge, which is free for two hours only, so a longer stay means the village pay-and-display off Hill Street. The lanes carry little traffic but have no pavement, several fields are grazed by cattle, and Aydon Castle is a paid English Heritage site with its own rules, so most walkers admire it from the gate and carry on.

Four miles in a shade under two hours, down to the East Allen at the old smelt mill and up the wooded riverside to Oakpool before returning by Monk’s Wood on a section of Isaac’s Tea Trail. Start in the market place at Allendale Town, where roadside parking is free and there is usually space except on the day of the New Year tar barrel parade. The river is beside you for most of the way with easy shelving access for a drink or a swim, the woodland stretches are safe off the lead, and the two hay meadows above Oakpool are grazed by sheep from autumn.

Six and a half miles of linear moorland walking with 230 metres of climbing, three and a half hours over the ridge between the East and West Allen on the trail named after the Victorian tea seller Isaac Holden. Start from the market place at Allendale Town, where parking is free, and plan the return: the bus service to Ninebanks is sparse, so most walkers arrange a lift or double back. Big open ground where a dog can run, burns to drink from and no roads to speak of, but the moor is grazed by sheep the whole way, ground-nesting birds mean leads from March to July, and the last mile drops through farmyards at Mohope.

Five and a half miles and 250 metres of climbing in about three hours, up the line of the two-and-a-half-mile flues built in 1805 to carry lead smoke off the valley floor, to the pair of chimneys on Dryburn Moor and back on Isaac’s Tea Trail. Start in Allendale Town market place, where parking is free and rarely a problem; the climb begins at Allen Mill on the river below the village. Open moor gives long off-lead running and there is water in every burn, but the moor is grazed and holds ground-nesting curlew and lapwing from March to July, when the National Park asks for dogs on leads, and old flue workings leave open stonework to avoid.

Start from the free Tyne Green Country Park car park below the town, which is large, unmetered and the one place in Hexham you can leave a car all day for nothing. Open riverside grass makes this the best off-lead walk in the town, with easy shelving access to the Tyne for a swim, though the current runs fast after rain and the golf course section asks for dogs to be kept close.

Five and a half miles of level walking in under three hours, downstream on riverside and woodland paths by Dilston to the bridge at Corbridge. Begin at the free Tyne Green car park in Hexham and take the train or the 685 bus back; both run frequently and the rail journey is one stop. Long stretches of quiet riverbank where a dog can be loose, plenty of Tyne access for a drink and a swim, but there are two farm fields with cattle, a short length of lane without a verge, and the paths flood after heavy rain.
