Within 20 miles of this cottage are five ancient attractions boasting magnificent architecture fascinating histories and stories of royalty and betrayal including Chillingham Castle (2.5 miles) Bamburgh Castle (15 miles) National Trust Cragside (16 miles) Alnwick Castle and Gardens (16 miles) and Dunstanburgh Castle (18.2 miles). For couples who love to explore on foot there are walks from the doorstep and the Northumberland National Park offers stunning vistas particularly from the summit of Cheviot (19 miles) with views to the Lake District on a clear day. Stroll along the Northumberland shoreline at Bamburgh and Seahouses and experience the water sports at Beadnell Bay. Make your way through the front door of this cosy cottage where you ll find a wide hallway furnished with hooks for hanging up walking coats and scarves and a useful downstairs WC. Head through to the welcoming lounge and unwind with a cup of tea by the glow of the wood burner. This is the ideal spot for movie nights snuggling up on the sofas. The countryside-themed kitchen/diner provides all the appliances you ll need to cook up a storm and a large table where you can sit and chat through the day s highlights over homemade dinners. Upstairs the large super-king-size bedroom with a zip-and-link bed is perfect for early nights and long lie-ins and the lovely bathroom is fitted with a bathtub for a long soak after a walk a separate shower and WC. There is a bench seat at the front of the property where you can sit with a morning coffee and put on your walking boots with beautiful walking routes from the doorstep into the adjacent countryside. There is also a bench seat at the rear of the cottage in the stable yard where you can watch the horses coming and going. Of course dogs must be kept on a lead and under control in the stable yard. There is off-road private parking for two cars. Need to know: 1 super king size bedroom with zip and link beds (which can be made up as a twin upon request). 1 bathroom with a bath, a separate shower and a WC, 1 separate downstairs WC. Electric oven and hob, fridge, freezer, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine. Travel cot and highchair on request. Wood burner (first basket of logs included). Biomass heating. Freeview TV. Wi Fi signal is intermittent/weak. There is no outside space, however, there are walks from the front door into the adjacent countryside. Private parking for 2 cars. Five and a half miles and 290 metres of climbing in about three hours, out on St Cuthbert’s Way over Gains Law to the Iron Age hillfort on Humbleton Hill and back by the old drove track to Wooler Common. Start from the Padgepool Place car park in Wooler, which is free with around 60 spaces and never full, or drive the mile up to the small free Wooler Common car park to cut the climb. This is sheep country from end to end, with the National Park asking for leads through the lambing season, ground-nesting curlew and lapwing on the hill ground from March to July, and only the Humbleton Burn for water, though the forest edge at Wooler Common gives an off-lead stretch.

Four and a quarter miles and 250 metres of climbing in two and a half hours up onto the ramparts of the Iron Age fort on Brough Law and round by Ewe Hill and Cochrane Pike above the Breamish. Start from the free National Park parking strips along the valley road past Ingram, where there is space for dozens of cars but almost all of it is on the grass verge and it fills with picnickers on hot days. The Breamish is beside the road at the start and makes a fine shallow paddle, and the hill tracks are good off-lead ground, but the fell is grazed all year, ground-nesting curlew and lapwing mean leads from March to July, and there is no water once you are on the tops.

Breamish Valley

The valley road ends at Hartside, past river shingle, hillforts and cleared settlements, with parking on the haughs at Ingram and Bulby's Wood. The national park's own guidance is the one to follow here: dogs are very welcome but as a general rule should be kept on a lead, with particular care not to scare sheep and lambs or disturb birds. There is no shop past Powburn and no mobile signal in the upper valley.

Three and a quarter miles there and back with 145 metres of climbing, an hour and a half on track and hill path to a 60-foot chute of water falling into a plunge pool five metres deep. Start from the road-end parking beyond Hartside at the top of the Breamish valley, four miles of single-track lane past Ingram, where there is space for perhaps eight cars and the passing places must be kept clear. The track is easy off-lead walking with the Linhope Burn alongside, and the pool is the best dog swim in the Cheviots, though the rocks around it are slippery and the drop beside the fall is unfenced; sheep graze the whole valley and there are gates rather than stiles.

Budle Bay

Bamburgh

A huge tidal basin of mud and sand west of Bamburgh, part of the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve and one of the best wildfowl roosts in England. No seasonal dog ban applies, but this is a bird place rather than a ball-throwing place, and a dog off the lead here will clear the bay in seconds. Views from the roadside pull-in are as good as walking it, and the tide comes in fast across the flats.

Linhope Spout

A waterfall dropping into a deep plunge pool in a fold of the hills, reached by a two-mile track from Hartside at the head of the Breamish valley. The walk crosses open sheep ground and the last stretch is rough underfoot. Leads on, as the national park asks; there is nothing at the far end but the water and the hill.

Harthope Valley

A single-track road runs south-west from Wooler into the Harthope burn, ending in a valley of bracken, sheep and crags with Hedgehope and the Cheviot either side. Verge parking only, no facilities, no shop and patchy phone signal: this is the remote end of Northumberland and should be treated as such. The national park asks for dogs on leads here, with lambs and ground-nesting curlew and lapwing on the ground.

Six and a half miles and 560 metres of climbing in four hours, over the granite tors of Housey Crags and up the long grass ridge to the 714-metre summit of Hedgehope Hill, the second of the Cheviots, returning down the Harthope Burn. Start from the informal roadside pull-ins in the Harthope valley below Langleeford; there is no car park, no toilet and no phone signal, and the lane from Wooler is single track for four miles. Genuinely remote walking where the nearest help is a long way off: the burn gives water low down and nothing does above, the tors have short scrambly steps a big dog will need helping over, and sheep and ground-nesting birds mean leads on open ground from March to July.

Eight and a half miles and 587 metres of climbing, four and a half to five hours up the Harthope Burn past Harthope Linn to Cairn Hill, along the Pennine Way flagstones to the 815-metre summit of The Cheviot and down over Scald Hill. Start from the roadside parking above Langleeford, at the end of the single-track lane from Wooler: there are perhaps a dozen informal spaces along the valley and none of them are a car park, so early arrival matters. Water in the burn for the first two miles and nothing above it, deep peat hags on the plateau that a dog will disappear into, no shelter at all on top, sheep on every field and open fell, and ground-nesting golden plover and dunlin from March to July when leads are asked for.
