Four flat, largely traffic-free miles along the old Leeds and Thirsk railway between Ripley and Harrogate's Bilton edge, crossing the Grade II listed seven-arch Nidd Gorge viaduct. Firm surface the whole way, so it suits older dogs, prams and wet-weather days. It is a shared path with bikes and horses, so keep dogs close and under control; ice cream and the castle await at the Ripley end.

A neat two-and-three-quarter-mile loop of about an hour and a quarter from the cobbled market square, past the castle lakes and the little waterfall and out through Hollybank Wood, with 80 metres of climb on estate tracks and woodland paths that drain well in winter. Park in the village car park behind the Boar's Head; the 36 bus between Harrogate and Ripon stops on the green, and the Nidderdale Greenway ends here if you would rather arrive on foot. Deer and sheep graze the estate parkland so dogs stay on the lead past the castle, though the wood itself is a good place to let a reliable dog off for a while.

Six and a half miles of field paths and green lanes east of the estate village, three hours, gently undulating with several stiles and a stretch of heavy clay that stays wet long after the rest has dried. Start on the cobbled Market Square in Ripley, where there is a pay-and-display car park behind the village, and the 36 bus between Harrogate and Ripon stops on the main road at the end of the square. This is farmland from end to end with sheep the year round and cattle out from May, so most of it is a lead-on walk with only the green lanes safe for a run; there is a pub at Brearton at the halfway point, no reliable water for a dog on the route itself, and the field paths are best avoided between December and March unless you like mud.

You will also be ideally placed for the Yorkshire Dales the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the vibrant city of York. Stepping outside you will find the cottage has a choice of garden furniture and a BBQ area for you to relax. A BBQ is provided but please bring charcoal. There is ample off-parking space for two cars. The owners are happy to show guests their working farm which has cattle sheep and Clydesdale horses. Stabling is also available for guests horses if required. Please note 1 dog are welcome but guests must respect the fact the owners have working farm dogs who may be territorial. Need to know: 1 super king size double bed, which can be made up as 2 singles on request. 1 shower room with walk in shower and WC. Microwave, electric hob and oven, fridge and freezer. A mile and a half of circuit paths around 60-odd acres of woodland, heath and open grass on the northern edge of Harrogate, flat enough to do in half an hour and popular with local walkers in every weather, though a few stretches wash out and turn muddy after heavy rain. There is a free car park off Grainbeck Lane with a height barrier, and the 36 bus between Harrogate and Ripon stops in Killinghall village five minutes away. This is one of the few places in the district where a dog can genuinely run free: no livestock, no roads through it and plenty of open ground, but bring your own water because there are no taps or cafes on site.

Four and three quarter miles and roughly two hours out over the fields from Hampsthwaite's old stone bridge to the model village of Ripley and back down Hollybank Lane, with 110 metres of climbing and a handful of stiles that a heavy dog will need lifting over. Park on the green in Hampsthwaite or use the 24 bus from Harrogate; Ripley makes the natural halfway stop for ice cream, and the Boar's Head takes dogs in the bar. The route crosses working sheep and cattle pasture on the Nidderdale Way, so leads stay on almost throughout, and there is a drinking trough at the Ripley end.

Three and a half miles of woodland and old railway on the north edge of Harrogate, about an hour and three quarters, with one steep set of steps down into the beck valley and a steady climb back out. Start from the Nidderdale Greenway access off Bilton Lane, where there is free roadside parking and the number 2A bus reaches Bilton from the town centre; the Greenway itself is tarmac and stays clean in any weather, which is the point of it. Dogs are off lead all the way through the Woodland Trust ground at Bilton Beck and Rudding Bottoms, there is no livestock, and the beck runs clear enough to drink from all year, though the woodland floor turns to deep mud between November and March while the viaduct crossing stays firm underfoot.
