Dog-friendly Farndale

Six and a half miles with 260 metres of ascent, about three hours, climbing out of the dale on to the eastern moor edge for the long view down Farndale before dropping back to the hamlet; rough underfoot and wet in the gutters between the heather. Start at Church Houses in Farndale East, where there is a small car park by the Feversham Arms and an honesty-box overflow field in daffodil season, when the lane in is very busy. The River Dove gives shallow water at the bottom, but this is sheep country all the way up and leads are required on the open moor from 1 March to 31 July for ground-nesting birds.

The famous three-and-a-half-mile riverside walk from Low Mill to Church Houses and back along the River Dove, carpeted each March and April with protected wild daffodils in the Farndale nature reserve, and lovely in any season. The valley fields are nursery pasture for sheep - pregnant ewes and lambs in daffodil season - so keep dogs on leads at all times. Firm, mostly level path with toilets at the Low Mill car park; the Feversham Arms at Church Houses makes a handy turnaround.
