Three and a quarter miles round the one proper hill in the whole Vale, climbing the short pull past St Cuthbert's church and the private castle to a view that runs to the Minster twenty miles off, then dropping back through fields; sixty metres of ascent and about an hour and a half. Park on the village street in Crayke or start from Easingwold two miles west and walk in; the 31X bus between York and Easingwold gets you within striking distance. Field gates and a couple of stiles, grazing sheep and cattle on the slopes so leads through stock, and a beck at the bottom for a drink; the climb is short but steep enough to matter for an old dog on a warm day, and the descent fields are slippery clay after rain.

The town offers plenty of shops to browse and cafes to relax and watch the world go by. No visit to North Yorkshire would be complete without a trip to York which is 13.5 miles away including the impressive Minster castle and city walls. North Yorkshire is also home to magnificent country houses and Castle Howard (14 miles) is a must-see attraction and the starting point for some lovely walks in the Howardian Hills National Landscape. The long one: eleven and a half miles from Easingwold out to Crayke, up to Oulston Reservoir on the fringe of the Howardian Hills and back, with 190 metres of ascent and a good five hours on the move. Start from the southern edge of Easingwold near Outwood Academy where there is street parking, or use the town's free market place car park; the 31X bus links Easingwold with York and Thirsk. This crosses a lot of working farmland with cattle and sheep, several stiles that a big dog will need lifting over, and stretches of quiet lane, so it wants a fit dog on a lead for long sections; the reservoir is a drinking chance but not a swimming one, and the higher field paths hold water badly from November to March.

Seven miles north to the orchard village of Husthwaite and back on green lanes and field paths, three and a quarter hours, with one gentle rise onto the low ridge and a scattering of stiles and gates. Start from the Market Place in Easingwold, free short-stay parking and the hourly York bus, and if you want to shorten it there is a pub at Husthwaite for a sit down at the turn. Sheep and cattle graze much of the ground so this is largely a lead-on walk with the green lanes the only decent stretch for a run, and the becks are seasonal and often dry by August; the lanes and tracks hold up better than the fields, but the clay headlands are hard going between December and March.

Six and a half miles of flat arable country between the market town and the village of Raskelf, three hours, on field headlands and green lanes with several stiles and a mile of quiet road. Start on the cobbled Market Place in Easingwold where parking is free for two hours and the number 30 bus from York calls hourly; Raskelf has a village shop and a green at roughly halfway. This is working farmland with sheep in the pastures and cattle out from May, so leads on across the fields, and there is no reliable water for a dog on the route; the heavy Vale of York clay makes this a summer and autumn walk rather than a winter one, though the lanes and green tracks stay firm.

Five and a third miles with 190 metres of ascent and about two and a half hours, crossing the low ridge west of Ampleforth to the great rose window of Byland Abbey and coming back by Wass; the outward field paths climb steadily and the last field into Byland is often under standing crop with a narrow trodden line. It starts in Ampleforth village with free roadside parking, and the Abbey Inn at Byland at the halfway point takes dogs in the bar and does a proper lunch if you time it right. The becks near Wass give a drink, the ridge fields are open and pleasant walking, but the English Heritage abbey grounds ask for dogs on leads, and there are sheep and occasionally cattle in almost every field on the route.

Seven and a half miles with 180 metres of ascent and about three and a quarter hours, dropping past the abbey fish ponds and out to the old ornamental woodland of Yearsley Moor before returning on the field paths below the ridge; the woodland tracks are firm but the field sections are heavy clay from October onwards. It starts in Ampleforth village, where there is free roadside parking along the main street and the Hub Cafe at the abbey is the obvious end point for tea and a water bowl. The fish ponds and the beck below Yearsley give plenty of water and the woodland is good, quiet ground for a dog off the lead, but the route crosses grazed pasture on the way out and back and the college and abbey grounds themselves expect dogs on leads.
