Dog-friendly Castle Howard and around

The great baroque house and its lakes, temples and woodland walks in the Howardian Hills north of Malton. The gardens are dog friendly, water bowls are put out at the cafes, and well behaved dogs may come inside the Coffee Shop, Farm Shop, Fitzroy, Boathouse and Courtyard cafes.

A classic North Yorkshire pub with a pizzeria attached, on Railway Street in Slingsby below the Howardian Hills. Dogs are welcome, and it sits five minutes from Hovingham and Castle Howard for anyone stitching together a day's walking.

Malton's handsome 17th-century coaching hotel on Yorkersgate, an elegant billet in Yorkshire's food capital. Dog-friendly rooms (booked direct, twenty pounds per night for up to two dogs) come with a dog bed, bowls and a bag of treats, some with garden access, and pet-friendly dining tables can be arranged. Guests rate it among the most dog-welcoming hotels in the county.

A deli-cafe on the Market Place in Yorkshire's self-styled food capital, serving proper coffee, generous sandwiches and cakes from the county's best producers. Homely village pub on The Square below the ruins of Sheriff Hutton Castle, known for homemade pies, well-kept real ale and generous Sunday lunches. Dogs are allowed in the small bar and the large beer garden only, so book ahead and mention the dog. The Foss Walk and the castle-field footpaths start on the doorstep.

A serious modern restaurant with rooms in Hovingham, cooking almost entirely from its own kitchen garden and the surrounding estates. Dogs join their owners in the bar and snug, where water and a dog bed are provided, and the Sycamore Room takes them overnight.

A Commercial Street local on the Norton side of the river, five minutes from Malton station and the Derwent bridge, with a traditional bar, a separate restaurant and bed and breakfast rooms upstairs. The pub lists dog-friendly areas among its facilities but does not say which rooms those are, so ask at the bar before you settle in the restaurant side. Food runs Wednesday to Saturday, lunch and evening, and Sunday until half four; there is no food on Monday or Tuesday. No dog policy is published for the bedrooms, so ring before booking a room with a dog.

A Camping and Caravanning Club certificated site on Pear Tree Farm at Harton, a mile off the A64 between York and Malton. It takes caravans, motorhomes and tents on level grass and hardstanding pitches with sixteen amp hook-ups, and there is a small enclosed paddock that takes up to four units for people who want their children close by. The farm states that the nightly rate includes electricity, awnings, dogs and additional vehicles, so there is no dog supplement, and the site tells visitors to bring their dogs and let them explore the fields and track. It is a working farm with heated showers and toilets, a laundry, a games room and free wifi.

A village pub and kitchen on Town Street in Old Malton, just off the A64 and a short walk from the priory church. The pub states it is dog friendly, which makes it a sensible lunch stop on the way up to the moors.
