Blakeney Point shingle from Cley beach

NR25 7RZ
8 MI · 4H 30M · 95% OFF-ROAD

Eight miles there and back on loose shingle, four hours or more of genuinely hard going that punishes ankles and paws in equal measure, out to the old lifeboat house at the end of the Point and back the same way. It starts at the Beach Road car park at Cley, a pay-and-display gravel pen at the very end of the lane, exposed and sometimes closed after an overwash; there is no other access on foot. Dogs are barred from the whole of Blakeney Point from 1 April to 15 August for the ground-nesting terns, and again from 1 November until the middle of January for the grey seal pupping season, so this is a late-August to late-October walk, on a short lead, with no fresh water anywhere on the shingle.

Cley shingle bank and the East Bank

NR25 7RZ
4 MI · 2H · 88% OFF-ROAD

Four miles in two hours on shingle, a raised grass bank and a stretch of the coast road pavement, a circuit of the best birdwatching ground in England with Cley windmill in the frame most of the way. Start at the Beach Road car park, pay and display at the end of the lane, and pick up the East Bank half a mile east along the shingle; the Coasthopper stops outside the Norfolk Wildlife Trust visitor centre on the A149. Norfolk Wildlife Trust allows assistance dogs only inside the reserve and the visitor centre, but dogs may use Beach Road, the shingle bank along the northern boundary and the East Bank on a lead at all times, and the outside decking at the centre is open to them.
