Stamford Bridge and the River Derwent to Low Catton

Stamford Bridge sits in East Riding of Yorkshire, not in York, so it is East Riding's countryside rules that govern this walk even though the city is only seven miles off. From the free Riverside car park on Viking Road the signed footpath runs south along the Derwent past the old Corn Mill, through wet meadow and alder carr, all the way to the bridge at Low Catton, then comes back on the quiet lane over the flat carr land. The Derwent here is both a Special Area of Conservation and an SSSI, notified for the purity of its water and the plants and animals that depend on it, so this is not the river to let a dog swim in. The riverbank path is unpaved, cattle graze the meadows either side in summer, and it floods properly in winter - come after a wet spell and you will be on the lane both ways.
