Stamford Bridge sits in East Riding of Yorkshire, not in York, so it is East Riding's countryside rules that govern this walk even though the city is only seven miles off. From the free Riverside car park on Viking Road the signed footpath runs south along the Derwent past the old Corn Mill, through wet meadow and alder carr, all the way to the bridge at Low Catton, then comes back on the quiet lane over the flat carr land. The Derwent here is both a Special Area of Conservation and an SSSI, notified for the purity of its water and the plants and animals that depend on it, so this is not the river to let a dog swim in. The riverbank path is unpaved, cattle graze the meadows either side in summer, and it floods properly in winter - come after a wet spell and you will be on the lane both ways.

THE SMALL PRINTEast Riding of Yorkshire Council's countryside dog-walking guidance: keep your dog on a lead, or keep it in sight at all times, be aware of what it is doing and be confident it will return to you promptly on command. Around farm animals and horses it must be on a lead, and on a short lead in fields with sheep. No Public Spaces Protection Order applies to this route; the council's dog orders here cover only fenced children's play areas, school grounds, listed churchyards and cemeteries, and four named beaches on the coast. The River Derwent is a Special Area of Conservation and a Site of Special Scientific Interest along this whole stretch, and the riverside meadows are grazed in summer, so lead up on sight of stock and keep the dog out of the water.
