A gentle 1.2-mile circuit of a tree-fringed moorland reservoir just north of Osmotherley, on a wide, well-surfaced and largely gated path that suits dogs of all ages - many walk it off lead. Leads go back on where the route touches open moor and the Cleveland Way, as sheep graze right up to the water in places. Free parking at the reservoir and in the village, which has toilets and a shop.

A serious 10.3-mile day with 400 metres of ascent, close to five hours, climbing on to Scarth Wood Moor and then following the old Hambleton Drove Road south over the shoulder of Black Hambleton; broad stony tracks for most of it, with wet peat between. Start from Osmotherley village green, where there is a small pay-and-display car park and buses from Northallerton. Cod Beck and the reservoir give water in the first mile but there is almost none after that, sheep range the whole of the drove road, and leads are required on the open moor from 1 March to 31 July for ground-nesting birds.

Under three miles but with 137 metres of climb, this loop from Osmotherley village green takes the South End climb and drops back along the edge above the Mount Grace woods in about an hour and a half. Start at the medieval market cross on the green, where there is a small village car park and pubs on the square. The stone and grass going means a fit dog can be off the lead on the climb, but the upper section is open access land with a seasonal lead rule and the fields below the edge are grazed.

Seven and a third miles with 280 metres of ascent and about three and a half hours, joining the two quiet Oak Dale reservoirs to the summit of Beacon Hill by way of the village; the reservoir tracks are firm all year but the field paths between Oak Dale and Osmotherley are churned in winter. It starts at the Cod Beck Reservoir car park north of the village, which is pay-and-display and fills early on hot days when the reservoir becomes a swimming beach. There is water at three points on this walk and the reservoir margins are the best paddling anywhere near Osmotherley, but the Oak Dale approach crosses working sheep pasture, the reservoir banks are steep in places, and the moor stretch to Beacon Hill needs leads from 1 March to 31 July.

Seven miles with 290 metres of ascent and about three and a third hours, following the Cleveland Way north past Cod Beck to the heather of Scarth Wood Moor and Scarth Nick before curling back over Beacon Hill; the flagged sections are easy but the moor path is peaty and holds water after rain. Start from the village car park at the top of Osmotherley by the market cross, or use the Cod Beck Reservoir car park a mile up the lane if you want to shorten the climb, and note the Coast to Coast and Cleveland Way both pass through so the village fills with walkers at Easter. Cod Beck and the reservoir shallows are the swimming spot, the moor is broad open ground, but sheep graze it loose all year and leads are required across the moor from 1 March to 31 July for ground-nesting birds.
