A family-run shellfish shack and restaurant on the beach road at Beesands, selling crab, lobster and fish landed a few hundred yards away. Well-behaved dogs are part of the welcome, and the setting means a wet dog is nobody's crisis.

A 3.7-mile circuit of about two hours from the shingle at Beesands past the ruins of the village the sea took at Hallsands, returning by tracks and green lanes with 200 metres of climbing and one long flight of steps. Start at the free seafront car park at Beesands, reached by narrow lanes from Stokenham, with the Cricket Inn and toilets beside it; the lanes are single track with passing places so a wing mirror is a genuine consideration in August. Beesands is a dog-friendly beach all year and the ley behind it holds fresh water, but the green lanes get overgrown in high summer, the fields hold sheep, and the cliff edge above Hallsands is undercut and unfenced.

If you decide to stay in and cook a meal there is a well-equipped kitchen area with an electric combi oven and induction hob and fridge/freezer then enjoy your meal around the dining table with countryside views. You don t even need to do the dishes as there is a dishwasher in the kitchen to do the work for you. There are three bedrooms a king-size with its very own en-suite wet room and WC a further king-size and a twin. You will also find the main bathroom with a shower over the bath and WC. Venturing outside you will find a large enclosed rear garden area. There is also a patio area with garden furniture and a BBQ. Four point one miles and two and a quarter hours out to the most southerly point in Devon, down ancient green lanes to the coastguard lookout and back along the raised beach terraces, with 210 metres of climbing and a couple of steep pulls. Start on the green at East Prawle, which has a small free car park, two pubs and no public transport at all, so the car is the only way in and the lanes down from Chivelstone are single track. The green lanes and cliff terraces make for a long off-lead run, there is water at the Pigs Nose for dogs and drinkers, and the hazards are honest ones: cattle on the terraces, sheep in the fields and a low unfenced cliff above Langerstone Point.

Three point nine miles of easy coast above the eastern shore of the Salcombe estuary, taking around two and a quarter hours with 190 metres of climbing on rocky cliff path, a surfaced lane and one green lane. Start at the small East Portlemouth car park, or leave the car in Salcombe and cross on the passenger ferry from Whitestrand, which takes dogs for a small fare and saves the long drive round by Frogmore. This is the best dog walk on the estuary because Mill Bay, Sunny Cove and Rickham Sand all stay open to dogs year round, there is sheltered water to swim in on the way out, and the only care needed is the unfenced cliff top by Gara Rock and stock in the fields on the green lane home.

Snapes Point estuary loop

A one-mile National Trust loop out to a low headland in the middle of the Salcombe estuary, half an hour of gentle walking with a few steps and about 45 metres of climbing on grass and farm track. The Trust car park at the top of Sandhills Road is free and holds perhaps a dozen cars, so it is a good bet when Salcombe itself is gridlocked; the walk is also reachable on foot from the town in fifteen minutes. Dogs can be off the lead on the headland but the loop crosses grazed pasture with cattle in summer, and the shoreline below is reached only at a couple of muddy gaps, so this is a view walk rather than a swimming one.

Blackpool Sands

A privately run crescent of coarse sand in a wooded bay between Dartmouth and Slapton, with Blue Flag status and a paid car park. The owners exclude dogs entirely for the summer, and the ban covers the cafe and the car parks as well as the beach, so there is nowhere to leave a dog while you swim. Out of season dogs have the run of the whole beach.

Blackpool Sands and Strete

A 3.2-mile circuit of about an hour and three quarters that climbs the lanes above Blackpool Sands to Strete for the long view over Slapton Ley to Start Point, then drops back to the beach on coast path, with 180 metres of climbing and muddy field sections after rain. The obvious start is the paid beach car park at Blackpool Sands on the A379, and this is the catch: the beach owners operate a Blue Flag seasonal ban that keeps dogs off the beach, out of the café and out of the car parks from 1 May to 30 September, so between those dates park in Strete instead and walk the loop the other way. Out of season it is one of the friendliest short walks on this coast, with shingle to throw stones on and sheltered water; in season expect stock in the fields, quiet but fast lanes, and no dog access to the sand at all.

The outer of Salcombe's two town beaches, with the sea tractor and ferry landing at one end. South Hams District Council operates a full twenty-four-hour dog ban here for the whole season, with one narrow exception for dogs crossing the sand on a lead to reach the ferry. This is the strictest beach order in the South Hams.

Sharp Tor and Bolt Head from South Sands

A 3.6-mile circuit from South Sands up past the palms of Overbeck's to the rock towers of Sharp Tor and Bolt Head, about two and a quarter hours with 240 metres of climbing on uneven, rocky cliff path and a stepped drop into Starehole Bay. Start from the small paid car park at Tides Reach or leave the car in Shadycombe in Salcombe and take the South Sands ferry, because the lane down is narrow and the beach parking fills by mid-morning. Dogs are excluded from South Sands between 1 May and 30 September except to cross on a lead for the ferry, but the headland above is open and off-lead, with sheep in the fields behind Tor Woods and a long unfenced drop above Starehole.

A 4.2-mile circuit of about two and a quarter hours from the National Trust fields at Little Dartmouth down to the rocky shore at Compass Cove, along to Dartmouth Castle and back by bridleway, with 200 metres of climbing and sections that turn greasy after rain. Start at the Trust's Redlap car park, which is free to members and by donation otherwise and rarely fills; buses 93 and 111 reach Dartmouth town centre if you would rather walk it the other way round. Dogs are welcome off the lead on the open cliff pasture but there is nearly always stock in these fields and the drops at Blackstone Point are sheer; the castle grounds allow dogs on leads, and the only reliable drinking water is the tap at the castle café.
