Hutton Roof Crags limestone pavement

LA6 1NU
1.6 MI · 1H 10M · 97% OFF-ROAD

Ninety-nine hectares of the finest limestone pavement in Britain on the fell between Kirkby Lonsdale and Burton-in-Kendal, with clints and grikes running out of hazel scrub and dark-red helleborines in the crevices. Cumbria Wildlife Trust publishes the reserve as dogs on a lead and records cattle grazing at times. The red waymarked circuit from Clawthorpe Road is a mile and a half; the Trust warns that paths are narrow, uneven and muddy and cross pavement that is slippery when wet, so a dog dragging on a lead is a good way to turn an ankle. Take the OS map, because the scrub makes navigation harder than the distance suggests.

Park Wood, Hutton Roof

LA6 2PF
1.4 MI · 55M · 95% OFF-ROAD

Fifteen hectares of thin, light-starved woodland growing straight out of limestone pavement above Hutton Roof village, reached by a public footpath through the Lowther Court track. Cumbria Wildlife Trust publishes the reserve as dogs on a lead. A network of paths runs through the wood with stiles at the wall boundaries where it meets open access land, so a heavy dog will need lifting more than once. There is no grazing stock on the reserve itself, but the open ground beyond the walls is a different matter.
