Its own site lists the pub as dog friendly but does not name the rooms that covers, so ask when you arrive if you intend to eat. It is the nearest pub to Workington with a published dog policy on its own website.

Located within the village of Dean on the outskirts of the western Lake District this property occupies a peaceful relatively isolated position. With many walks from your doorstep you can explore the remote yet stunning Ennerdale Valley and the Loweswater fells. A little further afield you can soak up the dramatic scenery of Wastwater with views across to Scafell or heading north you can discover picturesque Bassenthwaite Lake. For families Whinlatter Forest Park has a range of activities on offer as well as walking and cycling trails through the trees. You also have lots of towns to enjoy nearby such as Cockermouth (7 miles) Whitehaven on the coast and popular tourist spot and outdoor capital Keswick and its outdoor specialist shops. As you d expect from an 18th-century Grade II-listed cottage there is an abundance of original features in the charming property. There also plenty of modern touches to ensure you have a comfortable stay. You enter through the kitchen door into the spacious kitchen/diner where the vaulted ceiling adds to the sense of space. The well-equipped kitchen has everything you ll need to cook up some wonderful hearty meals including a dishwasher fan oven microwave fridge and freezer and there is ample seating around the farmhouse table for everyone to relax together. From here head into the cosy traditional lounge which has a feature fireplace as a focal point with a wood burner for colder evenings. Despite its traditional appearance the lounge has all the mod cons you d need such as a TV and iPod/iPhone docking station with a Bluetooth speaker system. There are also some board games to enjoy. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms both of which have high ceilings with exposed beams and are inviting and restful. Completing the accommodation is a modern family bathroom with a shower over the bath where complimentary toiletries are provided. Outside there is a delightful enclosed garden from which to enjoy a morning coffee or the sunset with a glass of wine. There is also a BBQ for al fresco dining and a chiminea for added warmth. There is parking for up to three cars. Need to know: 1 king size 1 double bedroom. 1 family bathroom shower over the bath and complimentary toiletries. Fan assisted oven and ceramic hob, built in microwave, integrated fridge and freezer, dishwasher, washing machine. Wood burner all logs supplied. Digital radio/cd player, Smart TV and DVD player. Enclosed garden with furniture, BBQ and chiminea. Off road parking for up to 3 cars on gravelled area with security light. A large plastic bed, two dog bowls and a welcome pack are provided for the dogs (please bring own bedding). There is a picnic basket and thermos flask available for use at the cottage. Inland from Barepot on the made path that follows the River Derwent east out of Workington, through the woods below Seaton and on past open river meadows to the village of Camerton. Almost dead flat, well drained and shaded for long stretches, with gravel bars and slack water where a strong swimmer can get in safely, though the Derwent runs fast and high after rain. It is a long out-and-back rather than a stroll, so allow the best part of three and a half hours. Navvies Bridge at Barepot is the usual start.

Eight miles out of Cockermouth on the Allerdale Ramble, over Watch Hill and Hills Wood, down to Isel Bridge on the Derwent and the Norman church of St Michael and All Angels, then back by Gill Wood, Redmain and the fields above the A595. The National Trust grade it challenging, and the sting for anyone with a dog is in stage six, where the route crosses a run of fields on stiles which the Trust's own notes say are mostly not dog friendly. A big dog will need lifting several times. Watch Hill itself is grazed and the half mile of A595 verge near Wood Hall Farm is busy.

Just under four miles and about two hours for 170 metres of climb, out of the town centre by the sheep pasture path to the little top of Watch Hill, which looks over the Derwent valley to Skiddaw one way and the Solway the other. It begins in Cockermouth itself, a few minutes from Wordsworth House, and the town's Market Place and Wakefield Road car parks are both free for the first hour or two - a genuine rarity in Cumbria. The lower half is enclosed field path and lane where a dog can be off the lead in the quieter sections, but the hill is grazed by sheep and there are cattle in the valley fields in summer, and one narrow squeeze stile on the return will need a hand for a broad dog.

A Main Street pub of nearly two hundred years standing, a few doors along from Wordsworth House and at the end of the Watch Hill and Allerdale Ramble routes back into town. Well-behaved dogs are welcomed into the bar area, with water bowls and treats put out; the pub does not extend that to the rest of the building. It is one of the more reliable stops in Cockermouth for a dog on a wet day, most of the town's cafes being counter service with limited seating.

The best green space in Workington and five minutes from the town centre: the wooded upper park around the shell of Workington Hall and its walled garden, then down through Curwen Park and Mill Field to the River Derwent and back along the multi-user path to Navvies Bridge. Paths are made and even, and the river bank gives a dog a safe place to drink. The parkland is grazed by a tenant farmer's sheep which roam loose through the trees, and the site managers ask that dogs are kept from disturbing them or the nesting birds. Cumberland Council designates the land at Workington Hall as a dogs-on-lead area.

One of the older drinking houses in the Georgian part of Cockermouth, on Kirkgate a short walk from Main Street and the Derwent. Its own site says plainly that it is a dog-friendly pub and that well-behaved dogs are welcome, without carving out a particular room. Six or so real ales are usually on, some of them from the local brewery, and the pub functions as a community room as much as a bar, with board games out and groups meeting through the week.

An all-day cafe bar on Steelman's Walk in the middle of Workington, open from nine in the morning until eleven at night and midnight at weekends. The operator's own site lists the site as dog friendly without restricting it to one area, which makes it the most reliable indoor stop in the town for anyone walking a dog. Food runs all day, from breakfast through burgers, mezze bowls and toasties, and there is table service so you are not leaving a dog to queue at a counter.

A low, mostly level circuit of the quiet north-east corner of Crummock Water, with two short climbs and no fell top to worry about. From the Lanthwaite Wood car park near Scale Hill the forest road drops through conifers above the River Cocker to the lake head, then a rough shore path runs south past the boathouse and through High Wood, crossing three footbridges and a ford. The return climbs to the old Victorian viewpoint on Brackenthwaite Hows, with a short stretch of narrow roadside verge past Lanthwaite Green where a lead is essential. There is shingle at the boathouse and again where the path runs onto the beach, so a dog can swim most of the way round.

Up from the little marina at Harrington through the streets to the nature reserve on Moorclose Road, round the two flower meadows, the Ellerbeck and the reservoir that locals call the Rezzer, then back down to the harbour and the sea wall. The reserve path is even and wheel-friendly and takes twenty minutes on its own; joined to the harbour it makes a proper short walk. Kingfishers use the beck and there are toads and dragonflies on the reservoir, which is why the council designates the reserve a dogs-on-lead area. Parking is a layby by the reserve entrance or the harbour itself.

South from the Town Quay along the shore path between the railway and the sea to the harbour at Harrington, on the line of the England Coast Path. It is flat, open and exposed, with shingle and rock below and grassy banks above, and the tide reaches the wall in places at high water so check the tide before you set off. It is the most direct way to get a dog off the streets of Workington and onto open coast. Turn at Harrington harbour and come back, or take the train one stop.

A flat industrial-edge circuit north of Workington that is far better than it sounds: out on the old mineral railway embankment, now a cycle path, past the reedbed and two large ponds of Siddick Ponds SSSI, then west onto the Oldside slag banks and the open shore, and back along the coast. Siddick is one of Cumbria's most important bird sites, which is why the council designates it a dogs-on-lead area, and the reedbed edges are steep and soft. Access is free all year and parking at Dunmail Park is free.
