Nine hectares of limestone woodland on the Kent estuary shore between Arnside sailing club and New Barns, reached along half a mile of foreshore from the village. Cumbria Wildlife Trust publishes the reserve as dogs on a lead, which matters because the waymarked path has steep slopes with steps and steep drops in places above the shore. The foreshore approach from Arnside is uneven and is not always passable at high water, so time the walk against the tide and listen for the bore siren. Together the shore and the wood make a two-mile round from the promenade.

Half a mile out and back on boardwalk, wood chip and rough path across Cumbria Wildlife Trust's oldest reserve, a raised bog on the neck of land between the Kent estuary and Meathop Fell. Dogs are asked to be on a lead, and there is a hard safety reason as well as a wildlife one: the ground away from the path is very soft, with filled peat cuttings and deep water only feet from the walkway. No permit is needed and the reserve is open all year. Access is on a temporary line while restoration work continues, with permanent walkways planned.

A gentle mile around a low limestone knoll in the Winster valley, a mosaic of open grassland, juniper and hazel scrub that the Cumbria Wildlife Trust keeps in condition with cattle. Dogs are asked to be on a lead, and the cattle are the practical reason: they are on the reserve at times through the summer and are not always visible in the scrub. Its published dog policy allows a maximum of two dogs per room at fifteen pounds per dog, in a limited number of dog-friendly rooms that must be booked directly with the hotel rather than through a booking site. Dogs are not allowed in the dining room but can be accommodated in the bar if on a lead, and the hotel requires dogs to be on leads at all times in public areas. A level mile of Edwardian promenade along the edge of Morecambe Bay from the railway station towards Blawith Point, wide enough for pushchairs and wheelchairs and the most reliable flat walk in the district when the fells are in cloud. The town council's only published dog restriction is that dogs are not permitted on the putting green grass, which it keeps as a children's recreation area; the promenade itself is popular with dog walkers. There are five ways down onto it, including the station underpass and the Main Street car park underpass. The saltmarsh and channels beyond the wall are dangerous and not a place to let a dog run.

A short, steep waymarked circuit of about a mile and a quarter through the hanging ash and hazel woodland on the limestone shelf directly above Grange, with two small hay meadows opening out near the top and a view down over the Kent estuary sands. Cumbria Wildlife Trust publishes the reserve as dogs on a lead. It is a proper woodland path rather than a stroll, with steps, pedestrian gates and one stile on the way up from the Windermere Road layby, so a big dog will need lifting over that stile. Best in late spring for the bluebells and early purple orchids in the meadows.

A mile and a bit of raised boardwalk out across a restored lowland raised bog on the edge of the Kent estuary, reached straight off the old A590 between Levens and Newby Bridge. The Cumbria Wildlife Trust reserve asks for dogs on a lead throughout, which matters here because the sphagnum and the cotton grass either side of the timber are fragile and there are adders on the drier banks in spring. The path ends at a viewing platform looking over the moss to the Whitbarrow scar, and a pair of ospreys nests within sight of it through the summer. The car park is small and fills on bright weekend mornings in June and July when the osprey chicks are visible.

Just under four miles and about two hours for 200 metres of climb, up through the beech and yew of Eggerslack Wood to the limestone top of Hampsfell and its odd stone hospice, which has a viewing platform and a Greek inscription over the door. It starts on the promenade in Grange-over-Sands, two minutes from the railway station, and the free promenade parking plus the station car park make this an unusually easy walk to arrive at. The woodland is enclosed and shaded for off-lead work, but the fell top is open limestone pavement grazed by sheep, with grykes - deep narrow fissures in the rock - that a running dog can drop a leg into, so keep to the paths and the lead on above the wall.

Three hectares of open fen on the A6 south of Milnthorpe, just past the Lakeland Wildlife Oasis, kept wet all year and never drained. Cumbria Wildlife Trust publishes the reserve as dogs on a lead. This is not a stroll: there are no waymarked routes, the ground is very wet especially in winter, and the tussocky vegetation makes walking extremely difficult, so wellingtons are the Trust's own recommendation. There is no car park either, only the verge of the slip road off the A6, and you must not block the field gates.

A country manor bed and breakfast half a mile up the lane from Cartmel Priory, with four first-floor rooms, numbers five to eight, kept for guests with dogs. The best big view in the Winster and Kent country for the least effort: a steep pull through yew and juniper from Witherslack Hall onto the limestone plateau of Whitbarrow, then an easy walk over close-cropped turf to the cairn on Lord's Seat at 215 metres, with the Kent sands, Arnside Knott and the whole southern skyline of the Lake District laid out. Cumbria Wildlife Trust's Hervey Memorial Reserve covers the summit plateau and publishes dogs on a lead, because rare breed cattle and sheep graze the top lightly all year round. The scar edges are genuinely sheer in places, which is a second reason for the lead. Parking at Witherslack Hall is limited and there is at least half a mile of approach before you reach the reserve boundary.
