A level mile of Edwardian promenade along the edge of Morecambe Bay from the railway station towards Blawith Point, wide enough for pushchairs and wheelchairs and the most reliable flat walk in the district when the fells are in cloud. The town council's only published dog restriction is that dogs are not permitted on the putting green grass, which it keeps as a children's recreation area; the promenade itself is popular with dog walkers. There are five ways down onto it, including the station underpass and the Main Street car park underpass. The saltmarsh and channels beyond the wall are dangerous and not a place to let a dog run.
A short, steep waymarked circuit of about a mile and a quarter through the hanging ash and hazel woodland on the limestone shelf directly above Grange, with two small hay meadows opening out near the top and a view down over the Kent estuary sands. Cumbria Wildlife Trust publishes the reserve as dogs on a lead. It is a proper woodland path rather than a stroll, with steps, pedestrian gates and one stile on the way up from the Windermere Road layby, so a big dog will need lifting over that stile. Best in late spring for the bluebells and early purple orchids in the meadows.
Just under four miles and about two hours for 200 metres of climb, up through the beech and yew of Eggerslack Wood to the limestone top of Hampsfell and its odd stone hospice, which has a viewing platform and a Greek inscription over the door. It starts on the promenade in Grange-over-Sands, two minutes from the railway station, and the free promenade parking plus the station car park make this an unusually easy walk to arrive at. The woodland is enclosed and shaded for off-lead work, but the fell top is open limestone pavement grazed by sheep, with grykes - deep narrow fissures in the rock - that a running dog can drop a leg into, so keep to the paths and the lead on above the wall.
A Main Street pub in Grange with a refurbished restaurant looking out over Morecambe Bay and six en-suite rooms upstairs. Dogs are very welcome in the bar area; the dining room is not included in that welcome.
