Two and a half miles north out of Alston on the Pennine Way to the grass ramparts of Whitley Castle, the Roman fort of Epiacum on the Maiden Way, and back the same line. The path climbs steadily out of the town past Harbut Lodge, drops to cross the Gilderdale Burn and then contours up the hillside with the whole South Tyne valley opening behind you. It is walled pasture the whole way with stock in most fields and a fair number of gates. The fort itself is on working farmland, so the lead stays on.

ADD A WALKA country house hotel with cottages on Lovelady Lane, in gardens running down to the River Nent a couple of miles east of Alston. The house states that some of its rooms are dog friendly and that the cottages are dog friendly, and asks you to contact them in advance to check availability - which is the point, because not every room takes a dog. No charge is published. The grounds and the Nent are on the doorstep, and the Pennine Way and Isaac's Tea Trail are both within walking distance.
