Known to everyone as Nellie’s after a long-serving licensee, this Samuel Smith’s house on Hengate beside the bus station is a warren of panelled corridors, gas lamps, bare boards and real fires that has barely changed in a century. It is one of the most photographed interiors in the East Riding and worth a look even if you are only passing through. Dogs are limited to the patio at the back, which is a genuine restriction in a pub whose whole point is the inside.
