Eight miles and around five hours over Yorkshire's highest ground: an easy track under the Ribblehead viaduct and up beside the Settle to Carlisle line, then a long grassy ridge to the summit before a steep, awkward stepped descent to the farms in the valley bottom. Ribblehead has its own request stop on the Settle to Carlisle line, which is the best way to arrive; the roadside parking by the Station Inn fills by nine on a summer Saturday. The whole fell is grazed and the lead stays on from car to car, and the honest warning for a big dog is the stiles - the summit ridge and the descent use tall ladder stiles over the wall that no dog can climb, so you will be lifting a heavy animal over several of them at head height, and there is no water between Force Gill and Bruntscar.

THE SMALL PRINTLeads throughout - open sheep fell with lambing from March and ground-nesting birds to July. The descent off the summit is a steep stepped path with a run of ladder stiles a dog cannot climb.
