Two Howes Rigg and Simon Howe

Eight and a half miles onto the open top with 230 metres of ascent and the best part of four hours, climbing past Mallyan Spout and out along Two Howes Rigg to the Bronze Age cairn at Simon Howe; the moor path is peat and it holds standing water for weeks, so gaiters or a willingness to get wet are needed. It starts on Goathland village green, five minutes from Goathland station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which makes this one of the few genuinely car-free moor walks in the park. West Beck below Mallyan Spout gives a deep pool for swimming and the moor is wide open ground, but this is grouse moor grazed by hardy sheep and ground-nesting curlew, golden plover and lapwing use it, so leads are required on the open moor from 1 March to 31 July.
