A small pub with a busy restaurant on Jockey Road, Oxspring, a few hundred yards from the Trans Pennine Trail where it runs along the old Woodhead line under the Penistone viaduct. Muddy boots and muddy paws are both spelled out as welcome, and there is a food menu for the dogs as well as the people, which is unusual anywhere in this valley. Garden, car park and level access at the front. CAMRA's Barnsley branch surveyors record the welcome and the dog menu; the pub publishes no written policy of its own.

A micropub run out of the garage of a private house on Bower Hill, Oxspring, opened in 2017 and about as small and informal as a pub gets, with a garden that is really the owners' yard. Oxspring sits on the Trans Pennine Trail where it drops off the Penistone viaduct towards Thurgoland, so this is a genuine trail-side stop. It is only open Thursday to Sunday, so plan around it. CAMRA's Barnsley branch surveyors list it as dog friendly; there is no website or written policy.

The first four miles of the Trans Pennine Trail's Penistone to Old Moor section, and the only part of it that leaves the railway. You follow the old line east from the car park behind Penistone market to Oxspring, where a very short stretch of road takes you onto Willow Lane, an old packhorse route that climbs steeply out of the Don valley. Off-road lanes and a farm track then drop you back onto the dismantled railway and into Silkstone Common, which has shops and a pub. Both ends have a station on the Penistone line, so it works one way with a train back.
