The first four miles of the Trans Pennine Trail's Penistone to Old Moor section, and the only part of it that leaves the railway. You follow the old line east from the car park behind Penistone market to Oxspring, where a very short stretch of road takes you onto Willow Lane, an old packhorse route that climbs steeply out of the Don valley. Off-road lanes and a farm track then drop you back onto the dismantled railway and into Silkstone Common, which has shops and a pub. Both ends have a station on the Penistone line, so it works one way with a train back.
THE SMALL PRINTTrans Pennine Trail walker user code: "Please keep dogs under close control and in sight. It is better to use a short lead, especially on highly populated sections and near farm animals and horses", and "Please pick up after your dog and put it in a bin. If no bins are available, take your dog waste home." Willow Lane runs between working fields with stock in them, so that is the stretch to have the lead on. Barnsley Council's borough-wide dog control PSPO of 1 April 2025 applies throughout: clear up, carry the means to do so, and lead the dog if an authorised officer directs; fixed penalty £100.
