Directions to the start →

A 6.6-mile half day with 210 metres of ascent and about three hours, running south down Hutton Beck into Douthwaite Dale before picking up the Tabular Hills Walk on the limestone shelf and looping back; it is field path and green lane rather than moor, with a handful of stiles and one steep bank out of the dale. It starts from the National Park car park at Hutton-le-Hole by the Ryedale Folk Museum; the Moorsbus serves the village in summer and there is a tea room and a pub at the start and finish. Hutton Beck runs beside the path for the first mile with easy access for a drink, but the Tabular Hills section crosses arable and grazing land with sheep and cattle, and several stiles are the narrow squeeze type that a large dog will need lifting over.

Hutton-le-Hole Village Loop

YO62 6UA
3.1 MI · 1H 25M · 80% OFF-ROAD

A gentle 3.1-mile stroll with only 110 metres of climbing, an hour and a half at an easy pace, following Hutton Beck out of the village on to the fringe of the moor and back over pasture; a handful of stiles and one boggy corner after rain. Start on the famous sheep-cropped green in the middle of the village, where the pay-and-display car park on Moor Lane is the sensible option at approximately YO62 6UA. The beck runs shallow and clean the whole way for drinking and paddling, but the village greens and the surrounding fields are all grazed by loose sheep, so this is a lead walk with only short off-lead moments on the moor edge.

Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the site, including inside the buildings, with water available near reception - genuinely one of Yorkshire's most dog-friendly attractions. Take your dog-waste bags home, as no bins are provided.
