It is a drinking pub with pool tables, darts, live sport and a DJ at weekends rather than a food house. Wombwell Wood and Elsecar Reservoir are both within a couple of miles.

It is a drinking pub rather than a dining one, and there is no published detail on which rooms a dog may use, so ask at the bar. Elsecar Heritage Centre and the reservoir are about a mile down the hill, which makes this the nearest town centre pub to that walk.
A micropub carved out of the old tap room of the Potters Wheel on the parade at Clough Fields Road, so it is a small single space rather than the sprawling estate pub it used to be. One cask line, a keg range and pizzas, with a garden and its own parking. Handy for a stop between Hoyland and the Elsecar valley. CAMRA's Barnsley branch surveyors record the pub as dog friendly; it publishes no dog policy of its own.
