Spaunton Moor and Ana Cross from Hutton-le-Hole

Eight and a half miles with 280 metres of ascent and about four hours, rising steadily out of the village onto Spaunton Moor to the stone cross at Ana Cross before swinging east and dropping back through Lastingham; the moor tracks are firm but the descent to Lastingham is stepped and awkward in places. Start on the green at Hutton-le-Hole, where the National Park pay-and-display beside the Ryedale Folk Museum is the only formal parking and the village lanes are heavily restricted. Hutton Beck at the start and the springs at Lastingham give water, and the broad moor bridleways suit a dog that ranges, but blackface sheep graze the green and the whole moor, and ground-nesting birds mean leads on the open moor from 1 March to 31 July.
