The smaller and quieter of the pair of reservoirs above Ingbirchworth, half a mile from its bigger neighbour and rarely busy. Yorkshire Water planted the ground around it with native oak and wildflowers, so it holds its interest through the year in a way the bare moorland reservoirs do not. The circuit is about a mile and a half on a mixture of wide surfaced track and narrow paths that Yorkshire Water itself describes as muddy and riddled with tree roots, so it is not a route for a pushchair. Parking is on-street only, on Royd Moor Road.

THE SMALL PRINTYorkshire Water's rules for Royd Moor: "Keep your dog on a lead" and "clean up after your dog". Dogs must not swim in or drink the reservoir because of blue-green algae, dangerous machinery and strong currents. Yorkshire Water asks for a short lead between 1 March and 31 July for ground-nesting birds and all year round near farm animals. Barnsley Council's borough-wide dog control PSPO of 1 April 2025 requires clearing up, carrying the means to do so, and leading the dog on an authorised officer's direction; fixed penalty £100.
