Directions to the start →

A mile and a half round a small Yorkshire Water reservoir on the moor edge above Penistone, with the best of it along the nineteenth-century dam wall looking back over the water to the Pennines. There is no car park and no toilet: parking is on-street on Wellthorne Lane in Ingbirchworth village, S36 7GN, which is a narrow lane where residents need to get past. The far half at the shallow western head is grassier and wetter than the dam end. The Fountain Inn is a hundred yards from the parking, which makes this the shortest walk-and-a-pint pairing in the patch.

THE SMALL PRINTYorkshire Water's visitor rules for Ingbirchworth: "Keep your dog on a lead" and "clean up after your dog"; the site also asks you to stick to the path, not to light fires or barbecues and to take litter home. Dogs must not swim in or drink the reservoir because of blue-green algae, dangerous machinery and strong currents. Yorkshire Water asks for a short lead between 1 March and 31 July for ground-nesting birds. Barnsley Council's borough-wide dog control PSPO of 1 April 2025 requires clearing up, carrying the means to do so, and leading the dog on an authorised officer's direction; fixed penalty £100.
