A stone village pub at 313 Barnsley Road on the ridge between Penistone and Silkstone, with several distinct drinking and eating spaces rather than one room, a real fire and a garden. Walkers and dogs are both explicitly welcomed, which matters here because the pub sits on the lane network between the Trans Pennine Trail at Penistone and the Silkstone Waggonway paths. Food is served lunchtime and evening and there is a car park. CAMRA's Barnsley branch surveyors record the welcome for walkers and dogs; the pub publishes no written policy of its own.

The village green at Hoylandswaine, two miles east of Penistone on the A628, known locally as The Nook, with a refurbished play area and grass behind it. Barnsley Council upgraded it in its Love Where You Live programme along with the other Penistone ward greens. It is a few minutes round and the value of it is the lanes running north and south out of the village into open farmland, where the Penistone Boundary Walk passes. On its own it is a village green, not a walk.
