Directions to the start →

Six and a half miles and about three hours on lanes, a long farm track and the grass river wall, out from the village through the boatyards on Womack Water to the ruined gatehouse of St Benet's Abbey standing alone on the marsh above the Bure. Start from the free village parking on Norwich Road at Ludham, beside the church, which is untimed and rarely full; the staithe at the end of Horsefen Road has only a handful of spaces. St Benet's Abbey is one of the two Broads historic sites that expressly welcomes dogs, on leads, and the marsh crossing is grazed by cattle for much of the year with deep unfenced dykes on both sides of the track.

THE SMALL PRINTDogs are welcome at St Benet's Abbey but must be kept on a lead. On the open access marsh a short lead is required between 1 March and 31 July for ground-nesting birds, and a lead all year where cattle are grazing.
