Directions to the start →

Seven and a quarter miles and close to three hours on old railway trackbed, boardwalk, heath and a stretch of the Peddars Way, threading between the pingos, the ice-age ponds that pock this corner of the Brecks and hold water most of the year. It starts from the Great Eastern Pingo Trail car park behind a lay-by on the A1075 Watton to Thetford road just before Stow Bedon, postcode NR17 1DP, which is free but unlit and easy to drive past. Norfolk Wildlife Trust asks for dogs on a lead at Thompson Common, where cattle, ponies, sheep and goats all graze at different times of year, and some compartments carry a temporary no-dogs restriction, so read the signage at the gate.

THE SMALL PRINTNorfolk Wildlife Trust requires dogs to be kept on a lead throughout Thompson Common, and some areas of the site may carry a temporary no-dogs restriction. Cattle, ponies, sheep and goats graze the reserve, so follow the signage at each gate.
