A Victorian pleasure ground in a wooded ravine below Wharncliffe Side, laid out by the Marsden paper-mill family and now on Sheffield City Council's list of local green spaces. There are rhododendrons, a packhorse bridge, an ornamental drinking fountain and a stream running the length of it, which makes it feel much larger than its forty-odd acres. The paths are rough and rooty and the sides are steep. It sits between the A6102 and the Ewden Valley, so it pairs with More Hall and Broomhead for a longer day.

THE SMALL PRINTSheffield City Council has no dog control PSPO; the city's only PSPO covers the city centre from 7 April 2025 and says nothing about dogs. The rule here is the council's Responsible Dog Walking Code of Conduct: "keep dogs that do not have reliable recall on a lead", "stick to designated paths to avoid damaging sensitive habitats, ground flora, and tree roots", "keep dogs out of waterways" and short leads from March to August in ecologically sensitive areas. This is a wooded ravine with ground flora that matters, so the paths instruction is not a formality. Fouling carries a £50 fixed penalty or a fine up to £1,000 on prosecution.

Carr House Meadows

A patchwork of flower-rich hay meadows perched above the Ewden Valley outside Wharncliffe Side, one of the few surviving pieces of unimproved grassland on the moorland fringe and a Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust reserve. It is grazed, and the Trust's dog rule here is explicit about why: dogs are permitted but must be on a lead because there may be grazing animals on site. Carr House Lane runs through the middle of the reserve and is a genuinely narrow winding lane where the Trust asks people not to park at all. Leave the car in Wharncliffe Side and walk up. Best in June and July when the meadows are in flower.
