A patchwork of flower-rich hay meadows perched above the Ewden Valley outside Wharncliffe Side, one of the few surviving pieces of unimproved grassland on the moorland fringe and a Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust reserve. It is grazed, and the Trust's dog rule here is explicit about why: dogs are permitted but must be on a lead because there may be grazing animals on site. Carr House Lane runs through the middle of the reserve and is a genuinely narrow winding lane where the Trust asks people not to park at all. Leave the car in Wharncliffe Side and walk up. Best in June and July when the meadows are in flower.

THE SMALL PRINTSheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust for Carr House Meadows: "Dogs are permitted on the reserve but must be kept on a lead as there may be grazing animals on site." The Trust also asks generally that dogs are on leads during bird breeding season, March to August. Parking on Carr House Lane itself is expressly discouraged by the Trust because the lane is too narrow. Sheffield has no dog control PSPO, so this is the landowner's rule.
