Draughton has four hundred people, no pub and no shop, and one very good hill. Height Lane climbs south out of the village onto Draughton Height, the broad moorland shoulder between Wharfedale and Airedale, and from the top a restricted byway and a public bridleway make a loop east and back so you are not simply retracing the tarmac. The reward is the view: Skipton and the Aire gap one way, Barden and the edge of the Dales the other. Height Lane is single track with high walls and no verge in places, sheep are loose on the unenclosed sections at the top, and the moorland west of the lane is registered open access land with no dog restriction recorded against it.

THE SMALL PRINTCountryside Code: keep your dog under effective control, and on Open Access land you must have it on a lead between 1 March and 31 July and around livestock at any time. Sheep run loose on the unenclosed top of Height Lane, and the lane itself is single track with blind bends.
