The upper of the two Ewden Valley reservoirs, sitting above More Hall and reached on foot from the Ewden Village end of the valley road below Bolsterstone. Yorkshire Water's own figure for the walk is 2.3 miles and its own warning is that there are no facilities here at all: no toilets, no cafe, no car park. That is the point of it. The valley is steep-sided and wooded, the water is a long narrow strip below the Broomhead estate moors, and on a weekday you can have the whole of it.

THE SMALL PRINTYorkshire Water's rules for Broomhead: "Keep your dog on a lead" and "clean up after your dog", plus stick to the path, take litter home and no fires or barbecues. Dogs must not swim in or drink the reservoir: dangerous machinery, strong currents and blue-green algae, which Yorkshire Water says is poisonous and can kill them. Yorkshire Water asks for a short lead between 1 March and 31 July for ground-nesting birds and all year round near farm animals. Sheffield City Council has no dog control PSPO, so beyond the fouling offence, which carries a £50 fixed penalty, the rule here is the landowner's.

A short, secluded reservoir circuit in the Ewden Valley below Bolsterstone, less than ten miles from the middle of Sheffield and far quieter than Damflask or Agden. The path skirts the shore and the surrounding woodland with the water in view for most of it, and Yorkshire Water rates the walk one out of four for difficulty. Broomhead Reservoir sits directly above it on rougher, muddier ground if you want to extend the day. The lead rule is Yorkshire Water's and covers the whole site, and the water is not safe for a dog to swim in or drink from. There is no car park and no cafe or toilets, so bring water for the dog.
