The towpath of the River Don Navigation at Mexborough Low Lock is ten minutes down the hill and is the obvious walk to pair with it. The earthworks of a Norman motte and bailey castle on the ridge above Mexborough, kept as a small public park between Doncaster Road and Church Street with a memorial and long views over the Dearne valley. The motte and its ditch are the whole point of coming: the ground is grass and undulating rather than surfaced, and the climb onto the mound is short but steep. It is council open space with no lake and no livestock, so the borough PSPO imposes no standing lead requirement, only the duty to pick up and to keep out of any fenced play area. There is no car park, so it is street parking on Castle Hills Avenue and the roads off Doncaster Road.
A brewery beer hall on the Canalside Industrial Estate off Cliff Street, opened in 2022 with five handpumps of guest ales, street food of chicken and burgers, and canal-side garden seating with its own moorings on the River Don Navigation. Level access with a radar-key accessible toilet and its own parking make it easy with a dog, and the towpath past Mexborough Low Lock runs straight from the door, which is the obvious walk. Live music most weekends and a Wednesday quiz mean it can get loud, so the canal-side tables are the calmer choice. A brewery tap in a former club on Cliff Street, next door to the Gorilla beer hall and a few minutes from Mexborough station, with a main bar where the entertainment happens, a separate lounge and a games and function room. Two permanent Imperial beers are joined by four rotating guests, and the lounge is the room to aim for with a dog when there is a band or a karaoke on in the main bar. The River Don Navigation towpath below the town is the nearest walk.
