A bright cafe by the bridge at Chollerford, five minutes from Chesters and on the Hadrian's Wall bus route. Well-behaved dogs are welcomed inside as well as out, which is not the norm in cafes on this stretch. Breakfasts, sandwiches and cake, with tables by the North Tyne.

ADD A PLACEThe cavalry fort of Cilurnum beside the North Tyne, with the best-preserved Roman bath house on the wall down by the river. English Heritage lists it among its dog-friendly properties, with dogs on leads across the site. Flat, grassy and easy going compared with the crags.
