It starts from the free long-stay car park behind Watton High Street, which has well over a hundred untimed spaces and is only busy on Wednesday market day. Norfolk Wildlife Trust requires dogs on a lead throughout Thompson Common, where cattle, ponies, sheep and goats graze at different times and some compartments carry a temporary no-dogs restriction, and Thompson Water is the only place on the route a dog can drink.

Five miles and about two and a half hours, out of Reepham's brick market place down to the restored station at Whitwell and back along the old railway trackbed of Marriott's Way, which runs 24 miles between Norwich and Aylsham via Themelthorpe. Start from the free market place parking in Reepham, untimed and generous, or use the Whitwell and Reepham station car park if you would rather begin at the trains and the cafe. The trackbed is level, traffic-free and stile-free with a mix of tarmac, compacted gravel and earth, the field-edge return crosses grazed ground where leads are needed, and the only reliable water is the stream below Whitwell.
