Dog-friendly walks in Camelford

Five miles along the young River Camel below Camelford and back over the fields by Lanteglos church, two and three quarter hours with 180 metres of climbing and a good deal of mud most of the year. Start in Camelford itself, where the town car park is free, which makes this the rare Bodmin Moor walk you can begin from a bus stop. This is a poor choice for a big dog: several of the stiles are awkward and lifting a large one over the higher or multi-stile sequences is a two-person job, usually in mud, and the fields on the route are grazed.

Five miles over the two highest points in Cornwall, three and a quarter hours with 290 metres of climbing across open moor with no path worth the name for much of it. Start at the free Rough Tor car park at the end of the road from Camelford, which has room for perhaps eighty cars and is busy on any clear weekend. Two stiles on the Brown Willy ascent: the lower is easy and beside a gate, the higher is wired over and dogs must be lifted to reach the summit. Sheep, cattle and ponies graze the open moor all year, and dogs must be on leads no more than two metres long between 1 March and 31 July for ground-nesting birds.
