Dog-friendly walks in Burton in Kendal

A short there-and-back onto twelve hectares of limestone pavement on the shoulder of Clawthorpe Fell, entered by a kissing gate straight off Clawthorpe Road. Cumbria Wildlife Trust publishes the reserve as dogs on a lead. The footpath is slippery when wet, the ground is undulating and rocky with cliff edges, and the working quarry alongside has no public access, all of which argue for keeping hold of a dog rather than trusting recall. It is a good half-hour stretch off the M6 at Junction 36 rather than a day out.

Five hectares of former quarry floor and limestone grassland on Clawthorpe Road above Burton-in-Kendal, now colonised by orchids and rock-rose, with the working quarry alongside. Cumbria Wildlife Trust publishes the reserve as dogs on a lead. The ground is undulating and the paths get lost in bracken by mid-summer, so it is better in spring and autumn. It shares its layby with Clawthorpe Fell a few hundred metres up the road, so the two make one outing rather than two.
