A family-run cafe and bistro on Yewdale Road in the middle of Coniston, using Herdwick lamb and beef from Yew Tree Farm up the valley. Its own site is explicit that the welcome is indoors: water down, a warm room, frozen pup cups in the freezer and a dog wall of fame on the wall, with picnic benches outside under the fell for dry days. That warm room matters on this side of the valley, where the Old Man throws weather down onto the village all afternoon. Open every day, 9am to 5pm.
The cafe at the Coniston Boating Centre, on the shingle at the head of the lake about half a mile down Lake Road from the village. Its own site says dogs are welcome on the covered heated terrace, which is the outdoor seating facing the water, rather than in the indoor room. That makes it a reliable stop off the Coniston Water shore path or after the Old Man, and the launch jetty and boat hire are a few paces away. Hot food is served until 4pm; the cafe closes at 4pm from November to March and 4.30pm from April to October.
