Six miles and a little over three hours down the Dove through Beresford Dale and Wolfscote Dale, returning over the tops by Biggin Dale or the lane to Hartington. Start from the pay-and-display car park off Hall Bank in Hartington, a couple of minutes from the duck pond and usually with space outside bank holidays. The National Trust owns much of the dale and asks for dogs on leads all year where stock graze and in the nature reserve sections, the Dove gives clean drinking and shallow paddling the whole way, and the stepping stones and narrow riverside ledges are slippery in the wet.

Seventeenth-century hotel facing the duck pond, named for the angling poet who fished the Dove with Izaak Walton. Only two of its seventeen bedrooms take dogs, so say you are bringing one at the time of booking rather than on arrival. A good base for the Tissington Trail and the head of Dovedale.

Lilys Cottage

Hartington is an incredibly well served village with many amenities including pubs cafes shops delicatessen local cheese shop post office and more. From the cottage some of the best walks in Derbyshire can be found so don t forget your walking boots. Situated at the gateway to the Dales and in the heart of the Peak District National Park which is the perfect place to enjoy long walks leisurely bike rides or horse riding in the quiet Derbyshire countryside. The High Peak and Tissington Trail are within easy reach with cycle hire alongside is Carsington Water for sailing and water sports. Chatsworth the medieval Haddon Hall or in contrast Alton Towers theme park and spa can all be easily reached. Buxton renowned for its Opera House and Pavilion Gardens is also a short drive away. Situated next to the owner s home yet with its own privacy the cottage is approached via some concrete steps which lead you to the hallway providing a place to hang your coats. The twin bedroom is pretty in pink and is complimented with stylish soft furnishings and a little window seat to pause and ponder whilst gazing into the cottage garden. There is a bathroom with shower over bath and WC so you can enjoy a hot bubble bath after a day hiking the nearby hills. The gorgeous cottage garden hosts an array of mature planting and splashes of colour throughout the year. There is a table and chairs on the lawn with nearby charcoal BBQ surrounded by pretty planting perfect for enjoying the summer sun. Five and three quarter miles and a good three hours down the whole length of upper Lathkill Dale and back over the plateau by Cales Dale and One Ash Grange. Start at the small free car park behind the village hall in Monyash, which holds around twenty cars and fills by mid-morning on fine weekends. The head of the dale is dry in summer and the river appears from nowhere further down, so carry water; the dale is a National Nature Reserve with grazing stock where dogs are asked to be on the lead, and the ladder-like steps out of Cales Dale defeat most large dogs without a lift.

Five and a half miles there and back on a level old railway, two and a half hours at an easy pace, with cuttings, embankments and long views over the limestone plateau. It starts from the Tissington Trail car park at the old station, pay-and-display, a two-minute walk from the village green and duck pond; a second car park at Alsop en le Dale lets you shorten it. The surface is smooth and traffic-free, which suits stiff old joints and buggies alike, dogs need only close control rather than a lead, but livestock graze right up to the fence line in places and there is no water on the trail, so carry a bottle and a bowl.

Five and a half miles and about three hours linking two of the clearest rivers in England, with only one real climb out of Bradford Dale and back down to Alport. Park on Alport Lane or Church Street in Youlgreave, both free but tight; there is no car park in the village at all. The dales are part of the Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve where livestock graze large areas and dogs are asked to be on the lead, the shallow pools in Bradford Dale are the best dog swimming in the White Peak, and there are stone stiles that a big dog will need help over.

Seven miles and close to four hours across the limestone shelf to the gritstone tors of Robin Hood's Stride, returning by the Bradford valley. Start from roadside parking in Youlgreave; the alternative is the small free pull-in on the lane below Robin Hood's Stride, which holds about eight cars. Field paths cross sheep and cattle pasture almost continuously so a two-metre lead is needed near stock, the packhorse route has steep stone steps at Cratcliffe, and dogs can drink from the Bradford at the end but not on the high ground.

The old Co-op building in the middle of Youlgreave, above Bradford Dale and a mile from Lathkill. Dogs are only allowed if you take the whole hostel on YHA's Exclusive Hire, and even then not in the bedrooms, on the furniture or in the kitchen, and on a lead in the grounds. For a group with dogs that is a genuinely useful option; for a couple booking a room it is a no.

The Tissington Trail

Thirteen miles of the old Ashbourne to Buxton line, running from Ashbourne up to Parsley Hay where it joins the High Peak Trail. The surface is level compacted stone the whole way, with accessible car parks, picnic sites and toilets, which makes it the kindest long walk in the county for an arthritic dog. Tissington's old station yard is the best mid-point start; dogs need close control where the trail runs between grazing fields.

Three and a half miles and around two hours, flat along the river then a steep 130-metre pull up the grass cone of Thorpe Cloud for the view down the dale. The National Trust car park at Dovedale is the start, £4.50 for four hours and £6 all day, free to members, open 9am to 7.30pm and full by half past nine every summer weekend. Dogs can cross the stepping stones but the tops are worn smooth, uneven and slippery when wet, and most dogs are happier wading the ankle-deep shallows beside them; leads are required all year here because of grazing stock and the Dovedale National Nature Reserve, and there are water bowls and dog bins in the car park.

Five miles there and back through the whole of Dovedale, about three hours, past Lover's Leap, the Twelve Apostles and Dove Holes to the packhorse bridge at Milldale. It starts from the National Trust Dovedale car park, £4.50 for four hours and £6 all day and free to members, and the boardwalk sections mean the going is easy apart from the stone steps at Lover's Leap. Leads are required all year through the National Nature Reserve and where stock graze, the river is shallow and constant so drinking and paddling are never a problem, and the narrow ledges above Dove Holes have a real drop on the river side.

Dovedale and the Stepping Stones

Thorpe

Livestock — leads on Water bowls

The most photographed limestone dale in England, with the stepping stones a few minutes upstream of the pay-and-display car park at Thorpe. The stones are flat-topped but spaced and go slick after rain, so most dogs are happier wading the shallow Dove alongside them, and you can stay on the Thorpe bank and not cross at all. The National Trust asks for short leads throughout, as there are sheep, lambs and cattle in the fields; from Ilam there is an alternative route that avoids the cows and the stiles and takes ten minutes longer.

Three of the cabins are dog friendly, one with an enclosed decking area, and the farm is used to guests arriving with dogs and children in equal number. Five and a half miles and about three hours over the limestone plateau to the best-preserved lead mine in the Peak, returning through Great Shacklow Wood. Start at the roadside spaces by Sheepwash Bridge in Ashford-in-the-Water, which take a dozen cars and no more, so an early arrival or a walk out from Bakewell is wise. This is walled sheep pasture the whole way with squeeze stiles a broad-chested dog will need lifting through, the Magpie Mine site has open shafts fenced but unroofed and no dog should be loose there, and the only reliable water is the Wye at the end of the wood.

Unreconstructed village pub on Church Street with an open fire in winter and boules in the garden in summer. Robinsons list it as dog friendly, and it is the quieter of the two Ashford pubs. A useful halt on the Monsal Trail loop from Bakewell.
