Lathkill Dale and Cales Dale from Monyash

Five and three quarter miles and a good three hours down the whole length of upper Lathkill Dale and back over the plateau by Cales Dale and One Ash Grange. Start at the small free car park behind the village hall in Monyash, which holds around twenty cars and fills by mid-morning on fine weekends. The head of the dale is dry in summer and the river appears from nowhere further down, so carry water; the dale is a National Nature Reserve with grazing stock where dogs are asked to be on the lead, and the ladder-like steps out of Cales Dale defeat most large dogs without a lift.
