Gilcrux is a delightful village nestled between the famous Solway Coast and Lake District National Park. It is one of the few pubs in the Maryport area that also lets rooms. Its own website lists both Pet Friendly and Accommodation among the amenities but does not say whether dogs are taken in the bedrooms, so that has to be confirmed when booking.

Five and a half miles and a little over two hours with almost no climb at all, north along the Solway shore from Allonby's green to the rocky scar at Dubmill Point and back on the coast path behind the shingle bank. It starts on the green at Allonby, where parking is free along the front and by the old baths, and the walk needs no gates or stiles from end to end. This is a big empty beach walk with the Galloway hills across the firth, and the sand is firm enough to run a dog on for miles, but the shore is grazed in places by cattle brought down to the marsh, Dubmill Point is a fast-tide corner where the road floods on spring tides, and the promenade is covered by a Cumberland Council dog control order - check the signs on the day.

Eight miles out of Cockermouth on the Allerdale Ramble, over Watch Hill and Hills Wood, down to Isel Bridge on the Derwent and the Norman church of St Michael and All Angels, then back by Gill Wood, Redmain and the fields above the A595. The National Trust grade it challenging, and the sting for anyone with a dog is in stage six, where the route crosses a run of fields on stiles which the Trust's own notes say are mostly not dog friendly. A big dog will need lifting several times. Watch Hill itself is grazed and the half mile of A595 verge near Wood Hall Farm is busy.

One of the older drinking houses in the Georgian part of Cockermouth, on Kirkgate a short walk from Main Street and the Derwent. Its own site says plainly that it is a dog-friendly pub and that well-behaved dogs are welcome, without carving out a particular room. Six or so real ales are usually on, some of them from the local brewery, and the pub functions as a community room as much as a bar, with board games out and groups meeting through the week.

Just under four miles and about two hours for 170 metres of climb, out of the town centre by the sheep pasture path to the little top of Watch Hill, which looks over the Derwent valley to Skiddaw one way and the Solway the other. It begins in Cockermouth itself, a few minutes from Wordsworth House, and the town's Market Place and Wakefield Road car parks are both free for the first hour or two - a genuine rarity in Cumbria. The lower half is enclosed field path and lane where a dog can be off the lead in the quieter sections, but the hill is grazed by sheep and there are cattle in the valley fields in summer, and one narrow squeeze stile on the return will need a hand for a broad dog.

A Main Street pub of nearly two hundred years standing, a few doors along from Wordsworth House and at the end of the Watch Hill and Allerdale Ramble routes back into town. Well-behaved dogs are welcomed into the bar area, with water bowls and treats put out; the pub does not extend that to the rest of the building. It is one of the more reliable stops in Cockermouth for a dog on a wet day, most of the town's cafes being counter service with limited seating.

Inland from the bridge at Ellenfoot, following the River Ellen east past Netherhall and through the low farmland of the valley to the village of Dearham. It is the sheltered option when the wind is off the Solway and the promenade is unbearable, and the river bank holds trees for most of the way. Field sections are grazed and there are gates rather than stiles on the main line of the path. Turn at Dearham and come back, or catch the bus from the village.

A small touring site tucked between Elizabeth Dock and the marina on Marine Road, five minutes on foot from the town centre and a short walk from the shingle beach. The operator's own site describes it plainly as a dog friendly site. There are twenty-eight hard-standing pitches with electric hook-up and three camping pods, with an amenity block including a disabled and family wet room. It is the closest bed of any kind to the Maryport shore walks, and the promenade dog walk starts at the end of the road.

A harbour pub on Shipping Brow at the bottom of the town, a minute from Elizabeth Dock and the start of the Flimby shore walk. It does British pub food and a Sunday carvery, with outdoor seating on the brow. Its own website lists the pub as pet friendly but does not say which rooms that covers, and the food is served on a separate upper floor, so ask at the bar before going up with a dog.

The cafe on South Quay at the aquarium, opening from nine in the morning and serving coffee, scones and hot meals with vegan and gluten-free options, looking out over Maryport harbour. The aquarium's own site states that well behaved dogs are welcome in the cafe and gift shop and that only guide dogs are allowed into the aquarium exhibits, which is a clear line and worth knowing before you buy a ticket. Outdoor picnic tables under umbrellas seat sixty-odd, which is where most people with dogs end up on a warm day.

Three and three quarter miles and about an hour and a half on level ground, out of Maryport's Georgian harbour along the King Charles III England Coast Path past the Roman fort headland and back through the town. It starts on the harbourside by the marina, where the parking is free and plentiful even in summer, and Maryport station is five minutes inland on the Cumbrian Coast line. The clifftop section above the fort is short grass with wide Solway views and the promenade is surfaced the whole way, which makes it a good winter option; the headland fields are grazed, the seaward edge is low but unfenced, and the beach and promenade come under a Cumberland Council dog control order whose signed months are posted at the access points.
