A mile of white-gold sand at Whitesand Bay, the last proper beach before Land's End. The award-beach window applies, so dogs are out from 10am to 6pm between 15 May and 30 September. Gwynver, over the rocks at the northern end, is not on the council's list at all.

Footpaths from the barn will take you on treks to Gwenver where dogs are allowed all year round and you can join the fantastic South West coastal path. Be sure to check the listings of the Minack open-air theatre before you visit for memorable and unrivalled views out to sea. Your nearest pubs shops and restaurants are only 2 miles away at Sennen while great days out for all ages can be found at the Paradise Wildlife Sanctuary St Michaels Mount and Flambards Theme Park. External stone steps lead down to an enclosed patio area which gives way to a lawn. A short two and a half miles north along Whitesand Bay to the surf beach at Gwynver and back over the fields, an easy hour and a quarter with 100 metres of climbing. It uses the same Sennen Cove car parks, and at low tide most of the outward leg can be walked on hard sand instead of the coast path above. Gwynver has no seasonal dog restriction of its own, which makes it the obvious August beach here while Sennen is closed, but the steps down are steep, the surf is powerful and the clifftop path between the two is unfenced.

Six miles round the end of England, three and a quarter hours with 260 metres of climbing, and by far the best way to see Land’s End without paying to park at it. Start at the Sennen Cove car parks above the beach, which are large but fill by mid-morning in August, and return inland through Bosistow and Trevescan. A medium or large dog will need help over the stile near Bosistow Farm and most dogs need a hand across a stone on the footbridge; Nanjizal takes dogs all year while Sennen Cove does not in season, and the granite clifftop is unfenced with very long drops.

Sennen's wilder northern neighbour, reached down a long flight of steps from the cliff and cut off from the main beach at high tide. It is not among the beaches covered by Cornwall Council's dogs-on-beaches order, so dogs can use it year round at any hour. Strong rips and no lifeguard cover outside the season, so keep a dog out of the surf.

Three miles east from Porthcurno over the Treen Cliff to a working fishing cove, two hours with 170 metres of climbing and the turquoise water of Pedn Vounder below you most of the way. Start at the Porthcurno beach car park, which also serves the Minack Theatre and empties and fills with performances; the Treen car park is an alternative halfway along. Most stiles are fine although two stone ones have a bar at the top that some dogs need help over, there are horses and other livestock grazing the clifftop, and the drop off the Treen Cliff path is severe and unfenced.

Five and a half miles west round the last corner of the peninsula, three hours with 300 metres of climbing, passing the Minack Theatre and a holy well before the coastwatch lookout on Gwennap Head. It starts at Porthcurno and runs out past Porthchapel, where the stream crosses the sand; Porthgwarra has its own small car park and cafe at roughly the halfway point. One stile has a gap a very large dog will not fit through, though a gate alongside solves it; Porthchapel allows dogs all year, Porthcurno and Porthgwarra do not in the peak weeks, and Gwennap Head is high, unfenced and exposed.

Four miles between two working fishing villages, out along the sea road and back over the hill through Paul, two hours with 110 metres of climbing. Start in Newlyn, where there is parking near the harbour and the number 1 bus runs from Penzance every few minutes, so this is easy to do without a car. Less athletic dogs will need help over a couple of the taller stone stiles, some of the return fields hold grazing cattle and go deep in mud through the winter, and Mousehole beach is closed to dogs the whole year round.

Park at the top of Mousehole, since the village lanes are impossible for cars, or come on the number 1 bus from Penzance. Stone stiles here are fine for an athletic dog and hard work for anything else, Mousehole beach bans dogs all year and Lamorna is seasonally restricted, and the coast path between Penzer Point and Carn-du is narrow, rocky and unfenced.

Four and a quarter miles between two of the great headlands of Penwith, two and a half hours with 250 metres of climbing over ground that is rocky, boggy and slow in equal measure. Park in the small car park by the Tinners Arms in Zennor, an honesty-box field that takes perhaps thirty cars, and return by field paths through the ancient enclosures. Stiles here are reported fine for dogs, but there are unfenced mineshafts in the undergrowth around Carnelloe Cliff, so keep to the path; Treen Cove allows dogs all year although the rocky descent puts most off.
