Through to the kitchen the well-equipped area comprises of an electric oven and hob microwave fridge/freezer dishwasher and washer/dryer. If you decide to make use of the equipment and cook up a storm at the house you can enjoy your cuisine at the dining table which can seat up to six people. From here walk through to the conservatory a light and airy room with TV/DVD foldaway table and chairs and truly spectacular views across the rolling hills with access outside to the patio area. There are two bedrooms in the bungalow one with a double bed the other with twin singles. Both rooms benefit from having a TV and lovely views of the church. The family bathroom at the property features a roll-top bath separate shower and WC. Six and a half miles right round Cornwall’s largest natural lake, three and a quarter hours on estate tracks and woodland paths with barely a climb worth naming. It starts in Coronation Park at the bottom of Helston, which is free and central, so you can walk the whole thing without moving the car twice. There are no stiles anywhere on the route, dogs may use Loe Bar beach all year and there is dog ice cream at the National Trust cafe at Penrose Stables; cattle are sometimes on the Penrose parkland, and the Loe itself is deep and steep-sided in places.

Water bowls

Just under four miles round two tidal creeks in old oak woodland, a little over two hours with 140 metres of climbing and almost no view of open sea at any point. Park at the Helford village car park at the top of the hill, because cars are barred from the village itself in season and a shuttle runs down; the walk goes out past Penarvon Cove. One stile, a flight of wooden steps, is awkward for a large dog, and leads are needed between Penarvon and the chapel loop where free-range chickens wander; otherwise the creekside is shaded, muddy and very good for a dog that likes water.

Five and a half miles south from the Loe Bar over Halzephron Cliff to the church in the sand at Gunwalloe, three hours with 180 metres of climbing and a rather bleak, wrecking coast in any weather. Start from the small National Trust car park behind the Loe Bar, off the Helston to Porthleven road, and return by field paths through Chyvarloe. Stiles are reported fine even for large dogs, and Loe Bar, Dollar Cove and Gunwalloe Fishing Cove all allow dogs all year; Church Cove is the exception in high summer, and the clifftop is unfenced with some sudden drops.

Five and three quarter miles between the Helford River and Falmouth Bay, around three hours with 200 metres of climbing and the tiny hamlet of Durgan at the water’s edge. It starts from the National Trust car park at Glendurgan, which serves the garden and the beach and is the only parking for miles; Mawnan Smith is a mile inland if it is full. Stiles are reported fine for dogs, and Porth Sawsen, Prisk Cove and Porthallack all allow dogs all year, which is why locals bring theirs here in August; the headland path is unfenced and Maenporth at the far end is restricted.

Six miles from Porthleven harbour along the shingle bar that dams Cornwall’s largest natural lake and back through the Penrose estate woods, three hours and easy underfoot. Start at Porthleven, where the harbour car parks are central and pay-and-display, or use the National Trust car park at Highburrow on the Penrose side. This is about as dog-friendly as a walk gets here: no stiles at all, fences between the paths and the fields so livestock is unlikely, dogs allowed on Loe Bar beach all year, and dog ice cream at the Trust cafe at Penrose Stables.

A broad sandy cove with a stream running across it, below the headland where Marconi sent the first transatlantic signal. The restriction runs 10am to 6pm through July and August, so June and September mornings are unrestricted. Church Cove at Gunwalloe, the next cove north, carries the same dates.

Start in Mullion village, where there is free parking near the church, rather than the tiny National Trust car park at Porth Mellin which serves the harbour. Very large dogs cannot squeeze through the gap on the last stile and will need lifting, dogs must be on leads in the harbour area at Mullion Cove, and both Poldhu and Polurrian are inside the summer restriction.
