Free seafront parking along the Promenade, and verge space only in Holmpton village at the far end

From the south end of Withernsea’s concrete promenade this walk is outside the summer dog exclusion from the first step, because the council order only covers the sand between the first groyne north of the access ramp opposite Seaside Road and the beach access steps at Pier Tower. South of the sea wall the defences stop dead and the boulder clay cliff begins, rising steadily past the golf course and the old wartime pillboxes that have slid down onto the sand. Three miles on you are below Holmpton, where a track from the end of Chapel Lane gives the only way up. There are no facilities and no lifeguard south of the town. Walk it on a falling tide, because the sea reaches the clay at high water and there is no escape, and keep well out from the cliff foot.
