Free on-street parking on Preston Street and Coach Road; the Corkickle station car park is the reliable alternative and is free but small

The first leg of the Coast to Coast cycle route, on the trackbed of the old Whitehaven, Cleator and Egremont Railway. From Preston Street it climbs steadily but almost imperceptibly out of the Pow Beck valley past Mirehouse and Woodhouse, then runs through cuttings and open farmland to the village green at Moor Row. The surface is sealed tarmac the whole way, so it stays clean in winter and suits an older dog, but it is shared with cyclists doing the C2C and they come through fast in summer. Walk it as a linear and take the bus back from Moor Row, or turn at any point.

THE SMALL PRINTNo dog restriction on the railway path itself under Cumberland Council Public Spaces Protection Order (No. 1) 2024, but the path is a shared pedestrian and cycle route. Land at Woodhouse (CA28 9NZ) beside the route is a Schedule B dogs-on-lead area and the Woodhouse play area is a Schedule C dog exclusion area. Breach is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale.
