West Lutton is the point in the Great Wold Valley where the Gypsey Race drops underground and does not surface again until Weaverthorpe, so the valley bottom here is dry ground even after rain. A signed public footpath leaves the village on the west side and runs out along the valley, meeting a public bridleway signposted at its north end which climbs to the Malton lane, and the lane drops you back into the village past St Mary's. Grass and dirt on the rights of way, tarmac for the last mile, gates rather than stiles almost throughout.

THE SMALL PRINTPublic footpath and bridleway across farmed land with sheep and arable in rotation, so lead on in any field with stock. The return lane is unlit single-track with no footway. No Public Spaces Protection Order applies here and there is no landowner ban on the rights of way.
