Directions to the start →

Four miles in about two hours on sandy droves, forest edge and a short lane, out from the moated twelfth-century manor house at Weeting along the old Fengate droveways onto the Breckland heath fringe and back through the village. Park in the small lay-by next to the castle entrance and in front of the village church, postcode IP27 0RQ; entry to the castle is free and it is open any reasonable time in daylight hours. English Heritage welcomes dogs on leads at the castle, but there are four steps up from the lay-by and two kissing gates on the path to the ruins, the droves have no water at all, and rabbits are everywhere on this ground.

THE SMALL PRINTDogs on leads are welcome at Weeting Castle. Note that nearby Weeting Heath, the Norfolk Wildlife Trust reserve, admits assistance dogs only, so it is not part of this route.
