Free roadside parking in Seathwaite village for a handful of cars, plus the pub's own car park for customers; the larger free pull-ins are at Seathwaite Bridge and Hall Dunnerdale a mile south

A mile and a half there and back from the Newfield Inn at Seathwaite, across the hay meadows to the high stone arch of the Wallowbarrow footbridge and a short way upstream into the gorge below Wallowbarrow Crag. The Duddon here runs over slabs and through deep green pools between boulders, and the pool immediately above the bridge is the best dog-swimming water in the valley. It is flat, gated rather than stiled, and short enough for an evening. The meadows either side are cut for hay and grazed afterwards, so leads across the fields.

THE SMALL PRINTNational Trust Eskdale and Duddon Valley guidance: "we ask that you keep your dogs on a short lead to avoid any cases of sheep worrying". The route crosses working hay meadows and grazing between the village and the river, and the riverbank above the bridge has steep rock into deep water.
